DESIGN GUIDELINES FOR DOUBLE-DEEP PALLET RACKS
Double-deep Pallet Rack Storage systems are SPR installed two racks deep that are operated in medium aisles with trucks that can reach double pallet depths.
Double-deep Pallet Racking Storage systems results in Last-In First-Out (LIFO) access, 50% of goods are behind pallets when storage locations are at full capacity.
Double-deep Pallet Racks are most suitable for:
- Medium volumes (up to 3000 pallets).
- SKUs in lots of two.
- Medium land cost.
Advantages
- Medium to low storage system.
- Floor level is not critical (front loaded)
Disadvantages
- Loss of storage locations as only same SKU can be stored in front storage positions. Recommended storage loss allowance 15-20%.
- LIFO inventory management.
- Limited storage height (10m).
- Special trucks required.
- Poor visibility of rear upper storage levels.
- Reduced through-put rates when compared with Reach Trucks.
DOUBLE-DEEP TRUCKS
- Aisle widths – 3.0 to 3.5m (medium aisles)
- Storage area – 55%
- Operating aisle area – 45%
- Through-put rate – 12-18 pph
- Lift height – up to 9.5m
- (Cubic capacity is based on pallet height and available clear storage height).
SUMMARY Double-deep storage systems are medium cost when building, racks and trucks are taken into consideration. However, inventory products and quantities (PQ) and storage location loss must be considered.
